Careers in College: LBCC Students Find Work During the Pandemic
With the unemployment rate of Albany at 4.6%, slightly lower than the 6.2% rate of the US right now, it’s a great time to take a look at our LBCC students and what they are up to with their careers. Despite the Covid shut downs, it seems like many of our students are still doing their best to balance work and school. What are jobs and career opportunities that are in our area and how is the 2021 experience with finding jobs?
“I started applying for jobs in December of 2020. I found jobs in the Albany area on Indeed and uploaded a resume. There were about ten minimum wage jobs available at the time but none of them were what I wanted to do” Said Diego Ramirez, a LBCC student who works at Scenic Hill Nursery and Farms.
He struggled for a while to find this job until he found one that he liked. He found his job on Craigslist and called the phone number. Diego was offered an interview and got the job right away.
“I love this job!” says Diego Ramirez. Scenic Hill Nursery and Farms is currently hiring.
“This job is great because each day is different. It’s hard work, but there are a lot of hours available” says Diego.
IPI Integrity painting is also a local business who has recently employed Deyvid, a current LBCC student. Deyvid paints houses for this company. When asked if they were hiring, Deyvid offered information that could offer insight for a job seeker who can paint or roof.
“Yeah, they are hiring. The company is split into two parts: one does roofing and the other side of the company paints houses. Both sides are hiring” Says Deyvid.
IPI Integrity hires those who are over 18 years of age and who can drive to various job sites.
“Your favorite local business is hiring”, says Kyle Pope, a LBCC student who works at Hasty Freeze in the Downtown Albany area.
“There are many young people working here together and it’s always busy which makes the environment fun and work goes by fast!”, says the Pope.
It seems that Albany has a variety of job opportunities for students. For those students looking for something more in line with their career choices, Linn Benton Community College has a career services page on the website that can offer students a variety of resources such as resume building, career fairs, and educational ideas that bridge the gap from student to employer. They offer seven different career searching sites as well as opportunities for in person career exploration interviews.
